From 8 October 2026, Airtel free international roaming comes with its new postpaid plans: one free 5-day pack per SIM, per year, with 5 GB data and 60 minutes of calls. On the ₹499 plan it's claimable after 90 days. A Matrix eSIM is a paid travel data plan where you choose the data and days, with no trip limit. Airtel's pack suits one short trip; an eSIM suits longer, data-heavy or extra trips.

Airtel Free International Roaming: What You Get

On 7 October 2026, Airtel launched new postpaid plans. From 8 October, every plan in the range includes one complimentary international roaming pack per SIM each year:

  • 5 GB data
  • 60 minutes of calls
  • 25 outgoing SMS, plus free incoming SMS, so OTPs still reach you
  • 5 days validity, starting when you choose
Airtel plan (per month, + GST) SIMs Free packs a year
₹499 Individual 1
₹749 Family of 2 2
₹1,049 Family of 3 3
₹1,249 Family of 4 4
₹1,449 Family of 4 4

The plans also include unlimited data and calling in India and subscriptions that vary by plan. The ₹499 plan, for example, includes 100 SMS a day, Google One (100 GB), Airtel Xstream Play Premium and Adobe Express Premium for 12 months. Airtel prepaid and older postpaid users must upgrade via the Airtel App or an Airtel Store, and Jio or Vi users would need to switch to Airtel Postpaid.

Important: the 90-day wait

Airtel's plan page for the ₹499 individual plan says the free roaming is "claimable after 90 days". If you've just joined or upgraded, you may not be able to use it on a trip in the next few months. Airtel also hasn't listed the covered countries or what happens after 5 GB. Check these in the Airtel App before you travel.

Good about Airtel's pack

  • ₹0 extra on the new postpaid plans
  • Clear, published allowance
  • 60 minutes of normal calls on your own number
  • Every family member gets a free pack
  • No new SIM or setup; works on your current phone

Limits

  • Only 1 trip per SIM a year
  • Only 5 days and 5 GB (about 1 GB a day)
  • ₹499 plan: claimable only after 90 days
  • Postpaid only; prepaid users must upgrade
  • Countries and full terms not listed in the announcement

Which Should You Choose?

  • Airtel free pack: you're on a new Airtel postpaid plan, past the 90-day mark on the ₹499 plan, taking one short trip of up to 5 days, and 5 GB is enough.
  • Matrix eSIM: the trip is longer than 5 days, you need more data, you've used this year's pack, you're still within your 90 days, or you're not on an eligible Airtel plan.
  • Both: keep your Airtel SIM for calls and OTPs and use the eSIM for data. On a 10-day Europe trip, a 5 GB, 28-day Matrix Europe eSIM (₹949) covers every day, with Airtel's pack as backup.

The Verdict

Airtel's free international roaming is a genuinely useful perk with a clear, published allowance. If you're on a new postpaid plan, past the 90-day wait, and taking one short trip, it's hard to beat: no extra cost and no setup.

For longer trips, heavier data use, a second trip, or travel within your first 90 days, a Matrix eSIM is the more practical choice. It costs money and needs an eSIM-ready phone, but you choose the data and days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Matrix eSIM better than Airtel's free roaming pack?

It depends on the trip. For one short trip of up to 5 days with light use, Airtel's free pack is better value because it costs nothing extra. For longer trips, more than 5 GB of data, a second trip in the year, or a trip within your first 90 days on the ₹499 plan, a Matrix eSIM is more practical. For example, it offers 50 GB for 10 days in Thailand at ₹949.

Is Airtel international roaming now free?

Only partly. From 8 October 2026, Airtel's new postpaid plans include one free 5-day roaming pack per SIM each year. It isn't unlimited roaming.

What does the Airtel free roaming pack include?

5 GB data, 60 minutes of calls, 25 outgoing SMS and free incoming SMS, valid for 5 days. You can start it whenever you choose.

Does the ₹499 Airtel plan include free international roaming?

Yes. The ₹499/month + GST individual plan includes one free trip a year. Airtel's plan page says it's claimable after 90 days, so check the exact date in the Airtel App.

Can I use Airtel's free roaming right after joining?

Not on the ₹499 plan. It's claimable after 90 days. If you travel sooner, you'd need a paid roaming pack or a travel eSIM for that trip.

Do Airtel prepaid users get free international roaming?

No. You need one of the new postpaid plans, starting at ₹499 a month + GST. Prepaid users can upgrade through the Airtel App or at an Airtel Store.

Which is cheaper, Airtel's free pack or a Matrix eSIM?

If you're already on an eligible Airtel postpaid plan and past the 90-day mark, the free pack is cheaper because it's ₹0 extra. If you'd have to upgrade just to get it, compare the monthly plan cost with a Matrix eSIM for your trip.

Can I make normal calls with a Matrix eSIM?

Many Matrix plans are data-only, so you'd use WhatsApp or other internet calling. Europe and the USA have calling plans at a higher price. Your Airtel SIM also stays in the phone.

Can I use Airtel's free pack and a Matrix eSIM together?

Yes, on an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone. Keep Airtel for calls and OTPs, and use the eSIM for data.
