Vi free international roaming is now built into select Vi plans. It covers 170+ countries and up to 3 trips a year depending on your plan, at no extra cost. But the data, minutes and days vary by plan, and only certain plans qualify. A Matrix eSIM is a paid travel data plan where you choose the data and days, with no trip limit. Vi's benefit suits short trips on an eligible plan; an eSIM suits longer or data-heavy trips.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Vi free roaming: you're on an eligible Vi plan, your Roam-Free allowance covers your trip's days and data, and you want normal calls on your own number with zero setup.
  • Matrix eSIM: your Vi allowance is too small for the trip, you've used your free trips, or you're not on an eligible plan.
  • Both: keep your Vi SIM for calls and OTPs and use the eSIM for data, with Vi's benefit as a backup.

The Verdict

Vi's free international roaming is a strong benefit: no extra cost, 170+ countries and up to 3 trips a year on some plans. If you're on an eligible plan and your allowance covers the trip, use it.

Because Vi's allowance varies by plan, check it first. If it's not enough for your trip's days or data, or you're not on a qualifying plan, a Matrix eSIM lets you pick exactly what you need. It costs money and needs an eSIM-ready phone, but there are no surprises about the allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Matrix eSIM better than Vi free roaming?

It depends on your plan and trip. Vi's benefit costs nothing extra, covers 170+ countries and can include up to 3 trips a year, so for a short trip within your allowance it's better value. If your allowance is too small for the trip, you've used your free trips, or you're not on an eligible plan, a Matrix eSIM gives you the exact data and days you need.

Is Vi international roaming free for all customers?

No. Only on eligible postpaid plans from ₹501, eligible annual prepaid packs from ₹3,599 and enterprise plans from ₹451. The prepaid offer isn't applicable in the Assam, J&K and North East circles.

How much data do I get with Vi free roaming?

Vi hasn't published one figure. Data, minutes and validity vary by plan and circle, so check your Roam-Free benefit in the Vi App.

How many trips does Vi free roaming cover?

Up to 3 trips a year, depending on your plan. Check the exact number for your plan in the Vi App.

Can Vi prepaid users get free international roaming?

Only on eligible daily-data and NonStop Hero annual packs, starting from ₹3,599, and not in the Assam, J&K and North East circles. Monthly and quarterly prepaid packs don't qualify.

Which is cheaper, Vi free roaming or a Matrix eSIM?

If you're already on an eligible Vi plan and your allowance covers the trip, Vi is cheaper because it's ₹0 extra. If you'd need to change plans just to get it, compare that cost with a Matrix eSIM for your trip.

Does Vi free roaming mean unlimited data?

No. It's a set allowance of data and minutes that varies by plan, and the number of trips is capped.

Can I make normal calls with a Matrix eSIM?

Many Matrix plans are data-only, so you'd use WhatsApp or other internet calling. Europe and the USA have calling plans at a higher price. Your Vi SIM also stays in the phone.

Can I use Vi free roaming and a Matrix eSIM together?

Yes, on an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone. Keep Vi for calls and OTPs, and use the eSIM for data.
