Best Places to Visit This Christmas: 8 Destinations and When to Go
Eight places worth spending Christmas 2026, and for each one the week that actually works: when the markets are open, when the prices drop, and when to book. Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on a Friday this year, which creates two four-day weekends and pushes demand to the days around them. Fly on the 24th or the 25th and you skip most of it.
Most Christmas destination lists tell you where to go and stop there. The harder question is when. Arrive in Strasbourg on the 25th and the market is shut. Land in Lapland on the 22nd and you pay 60 to 80 percent more than the family who came four days earlier. Book Dubai in November and the beach is already full.
So this list ranks eight destinations on the usual things, but the useful part is the four dates attached to each: when to arrive, when to leave, when to book, and what a mid-range day costs once you are there.

The one Christmas trip that looks exactly like the picture in your head, if you get there before the school holidays do.
The sun does not rise in December, but it is not dark either: the sky sits in blue and pink twilight through the middle of the day, and snow reflects what light there is. Santa Claus Village is free to enter and open all year; what costs money is the huskies, the reindeer and the northern-lights chases. With a guide over five to seven nights the aurora odds are around 85 percent this winter, because the solar cycle is at its peak. The trick is the calendar. Between 18 and 21 December everything is open and decorated, the Finnish school holidays have not started, and rooms run 25 to 35 percent below the week that follows. If you can only do Christmas week itself, book now and expect to pay for it.
Vienna, Austria
Rathausplatz, Schönbrunn, the concert halls
The most complete Christmas city in Europe: markets, concerts and cake, and it stays open on the 25th.
Vienna's markets open in waves from 6 November and the big one at Rathausplatz runs 10am to 10pm until Boxing Day, closing at 6.30pm on Christmas Eve. Schönbrunn and the Wintermarkt at the Prater keep going until 6 January, so this is one of the few places where arriving on the 25th does not mean you missed it. The second week of December is the sweet spot: everything is open, the Advent concerts have started, and hotel prices have not yet climbed for the 20th onwards. Ride the tram 1 round the Ring at dusk for the lights, and book the Musikverein or the Konzerthaus early; the Christmas programmes sell out.
Strasbourg, France
The Christkindelsmärik since 1570
The oldest market in France and the one every list puts first. Go in the first week of December, not the last.
Strasbourg calls itself the capital of Christmas and has the paperwork: the market has run since 1570 and spreads over a dozen squares around the cathedral, all free to enter, open 11.30am to 9pm daily. The important dates are the closing ones. The market shuts early on the 24th and is closed on Christmas Day, so a trip built around the 25th is a mistake. The first week of December has the full market with a fraction of the mid-December crowds; the local tourist office says the same. Hotels fill six months to a year ahead, so if the city is full look at Colmar, 30 minutes by train, which has its own market and cheaper beds.
Dubai, UAE
Winter sun, five hours from Europe and three from India
Twenty-six degrees, fireworks on the 31st, and the whole city decorated for a holiday it does not officially have.
December is Dubai's best month: warm days, cool evenings, no humidity. The city goes all in on Christmas decorations at the malls and hotels, and the brunches on the 25th are an institution. The catch is New Year. Rooms from the 26th to the 3rd are the most expensive of the year, because the Burj Khalifa fireworks pull in the whole region. Go the week before Christmas instead, or fly in on the 25th itself when fares drop, and treat New Year as optional. The metro runs to almost everything you want, and Global Village, open until April, is the best cheap evening in the city.

The cheapest of the great Christmas cities, and the market runs straight through to Epiphany.
Prague's Old Town Square market is the one that stays open: it runs through Christmas Day and past New Year to 6 January, so it suits people whose dates are fixed by work. The city is also markedly cheaper than Vienna or Strasbourg for the same quality of hotel, and a mug of svařák (mulled wine) is a couple of euros. The tree lighting in late November draws the biggest crowd of the season; the first week of December after it is quieter. St Nicholas Eve on 5 December, when angels, devils and bishops roam the square, is the one local tradition worth planning around. Carry coins for the trdelník stalls and watch your bag on the bridge.

The Christmas that the films are based on. Expensive, cold, and worth doing once.
The Rockefeller Center tree goes up in early December and stays lit into January; the Fifth Avenue windows, the Bryant Park market and the Radio City show run alongside it. Hotel prices are the highest in this list and climb again for New Year's Eve, which is why the second week of December is the answer: everything is on, and the rooms are 30 to 40 percent less than the week of the 21st. Christmas Day itself is the quietest travel day in the American calendar, so flying in on the 25th is both cheap and calm, and the city is fully open by the 26th. Dress for real cold; December in New York averages just above freezing.
Goa, India
Beaches, midnight mass, a Portuguese Christmas
The only place on this list where Christmas is warm, Catholic, and costs $70 a day.
Goa's Christmas is a real one, inherited from four centuries of Portuguese rule: midnight mass at the Basilica of Bom Jesus, star lanterns on every balcony, and a week of village feasts. It is also 30 degrees and on a beach. The mistake people make is arriving for New Year. From the 27th the whole of India seems to land in Goa, hotel rates double or triple, and the beach shacks turn into clubs. Come for the week before Christmas instead, stay in the south (Palolem, Agonda, Benaulim) rather than the north, and leave on the 26th or 27th before the crowds arrive. Rent a scooter, eat at the shacks, and go to the Saturday night market at Arpora.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Christmas market, then Hogmanay
The one destination where the week after Christmas is the point, not the problem.
Edinburgh is the reverse of everywhere else on this list. Its Christmas market in East Princes Street Gardens runs from mid-November to early January, but the city's real event is Hogmanay: the torchlight procession on the 30th, the street party and fireworks over the castle on the 31st, and the Loony Dook plunge into the Forth on the 1st. So the week that is expensive and crowded everywhere else is the week to be here. Arrive on Boxing Day, when flights are quiet, and stay through New Year's Day. Street party tickets sell out; the surrounding hills, Calton Hill above all, are free and have the better view of the fireworks.

Per-day figures are a mid-range estimate for a private room, three meals, local transport and one paid activity, in the best week listed, excluding flights. Christmas week itself runs higher everywhere except Edinburgh, where it is the point.
The dates that matter in December 2026
- Cheapest days to fly: Friday 18 December, then Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Christmas Day is the quietest travel day of the year.
- Most expensive days: Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 December, and Tuesday 29 to Wednesday 30 December. With both holidays on a Friday, those two midweek runs carry the whole season's demand.
- How far ahead to book flights: four to ten months for international routes, and in any case before the 21-day mark, when the cheaper fare classes disappear.
- Markets that close on the 25th: Strasbourg, Cologne, most of Germany and Alsace. Markets that stay open: Vienna (some), Prague, Budapest, Edinburgh.

- Check the 24th and 25th separately. Half the markets in Europe shut early on Christmas Eve and fully on Christmas Day; the table above says which.
- Book the hotel before the flight. In Strasbourg, Rovaniemi and New York the room is the constraint, not the seat.
